The Urinary System
Organ System Proposal
Function: We are going to simulate a kidney filtering urine.
How it works: We are going to use a coffee filter to simulate how a kidney will filter out urine.
Materials: Coffee filter, cup, water
Construction plan: We are going to pour water and dirt into the coffee filter and show how it filters it out.
Biology principles: The coffee filter is able to filter liquid just as the kidneys are able to filter out blood.
Unresolved issues: There are no unresolved issues.
Function 2: We are going to take a balloon and fill it with liquid like a bladder holds urine. There will be a straw or tube which will simulate the urethra.
Functions: It will hold and spray out the “urine”, representing the liquids leaving the body.
Materials: Balloon and liquids
Construction plan: We are going to pour water in a balloon and spray it like it’s a bladder.
Biology principles: Bladders hold urine like a water balloon holds water.

Rather than using a coffee filter for our coffee filter to simulate the kidney, we are going to use a scientific filter paper to get more accurate results. Also, we are going to research the other types of cells and bacteria inside the bloodstream and figure out the size and shape to more accurately represent what gets filtered out in the kidney.
For the bladder simulation, we used tubing and framework to make more realistically simulate the bladder's function. We also use strings to represent the sphincter gland which can control whether or not to urinate at a certain time. Thought the balloon functions as a mechanism to push urine out of the bladder, we are trying to come up with a more sophisticated way to simulate urination.
